Jikininki

The Jikininki are the flesh eating ghouls of the East. They are the cursed souls of the dead who were greedy, impious or selfish in life, forever doomed to eat the rotting flesh of recently deceased humans.
Scavenging for human corpses and food offerings left for the dead, they often plunder the graves of their dead victims for treasure as they use this to bribe officials to leave them to their macabre habits. The walking dead they may be, but they despise their condition and are revolted by their constant craving for the flesh of the dead.
The Jikininki often appear as decomposing cadavers, sporting sporadic patches of hair and festering sores, they sometimes also have eyes that glow eerily or razor sharp claws. A frightful sight, they are rumoured to have the ability to appear normal by day, even adopting normal “lives” during the sunlit hours. In some cases, the Jikininki can be freed from its curse through remembrances and offerings (segaki) offered by relatives and acquaintances.
