Nukekubi

By day the Nukekubi appear as normal humans, however by night their heads detach smoothly from their bodies at the neck. The detached head will then fly about and search for human victims to kill and feed on. They are said to let out a terrifying scream that freezes their intended victim with fear.
As the head goes off in search of a victim, the body becomes inanimate, revealing the Nukekubis’ one weakness. If the body is hidden or destroyed while the head is away, it will not be able to find it and re-attach before sunrise, and the head will inevitably perish.
Nukekubi are known to live among humans in small groups, impersonating human families so as to stay close to their source of food. There is one distinct feature to the Nukekubi however, a red line of katakana appears right where the head detaches from the body. This is easily hidden beneath items of clothing or elaborate jewellery.
